According to FBI statistics, the month of July is when the most burglaries happen. Pair the coming summer holidays with an urban environment in the midst of an economic recession, and it seems a perfect storm for -- you guessed it -- home break ins.
But fear not. DC’s Urban Alarm is poised to become the area’s premiere security company -- and establish itself as the only one, as its slogan states, that can offer its customers Total Peace of Mind.
Miles Fawcett, the company’s founder and owner, conceived the idea for Urban Alarm some 5 years ago after being repeatedly disappointed by a well-known national security provider with whom he’d had an account for his previous business, a technology firm with offices in Woodley Park.
“I knew there had to be a better way to ensure prompt and capable response to alarm calls. Rarely are multi-national security companies invested in -- or even connected to -- the communities they serve. The most popular headquarter themselves in places like the Bahamas to benefit their shareholders above their customers. We want to invest in our community and redefine the industry by creating a sense of mutual investment and goodwill.”
Fawcett now blogs about on the company web site in an attempt to keep people abreast of a wide scope of security related issues, from emerging technology’s impact on the business to tips for making sure your home alarm system is working properly.
“DC is my hometown. I have a history here. It feels good to stay connected,” he says. “It’s true that summer holiday season is notoriously a prime time for burglaries. We use current and creative solutions to help DC neighborhoods secure their homes and businesses -- so a vacation isn’t ruined by worries about flooding from summer storms or time away from the office isn't consumed stressing about break ins.”
Urban Alarm is the only security company in the region that does more than dispatch the police. In fact, many of the company's customers benefit from their urban concierge service. What good does it do for an alarm system to detect water in the basement if you're thousands of miles away? According to Fawcett, "We want our customers to know their homes are carefully looked after and that if water is detected in their basement while they're gone, we'll come over promptly, get someone in to fix it. That's what we mean by 'Total Peace of Mind'."
Urban Alarm will go so far as to take their customers to the airport to minimize the risk that the criminally inclined will be tipped off to a soon to be empty house by a cab being loaded up with luggage. "An alarm system is just one aspect of security -- we take a holistic view, and we're confident it has an impact."
