Alarm Registration in Bethesda, MD

You will need to register any alarm system where the alarm company may dispatch the police. Urban Alarm will provide you with a Registration Form and a completed and signed Installation Certificate. You must then deliver or mail the Registration Form to the Police Department for approval. See below for contact information and mailing addresses.

Montgomery County charges a $30 registration fee for the registration of each alarm system. You will need to renew your registration every 2 years at a cost of $10. If you do not renew your registration, you will be penalized more heavily for false alarms under the False Alarm Reduction Section (FARS) code.

Making Changes to your Alarm Registration

If you change alarm companies, addresses or contact information you must alert FARS to these changes in writing by bringing a statement into the office or faxing the statement. Call the Administrative Office at 240-773-5000 for more information.

Who will be notified when my alarm goes off?

We allow you to fully customize your emergency contact procedure. You will decide whether the police (scroll down for district phone numbers), your alarm company, yourself or another family member is contacted first. In the event that the first contact does not respond, your system will move on to the second contact and so on. Please provide your permit registration number when you call. If you cannot provide this number, your alarm company cannot request a police dispatch. In the event that you cannot provide your permit registration number, your alarm company will contact people on your contact list.

Special Note: Your alarm company is not allowed to call in a police dispatch to your property until 7 days after alarm system registration. If there is impending danger to people or property during this period, you must submit a waiver to FARS. To do this, request a "burn-in" or "soak" period waiver from the Administrative Office.

How long will it take for someone to arrive once my alarm goes off?

Urban Alarm credits itself with having incredibly fast remote response times. However, response time for both Urban Alarm and police dispatch will depend on two variables: location of the property and time of day. Calls made from remote properties or during times of high traffic congestion will have longer response times. Make sure to have a current permit registration number ready at the time of the call.

What do I do if I trigger a false alarm?

If you accidently set off your alarm system:

Enter your disarm code to reset your alarm.
Call Urban Alarm at 202-265-2700 and be prepared to give them your full name, permit number and passphrase to cancel the false alarm. We reccomend that you keep a business card with your passphrase written on it in an easily accessible, secure location.
Do not leave the property until you have called Urban Alarm and given them your passphrase.

False Alarm Response (FAR)

The False Alarm Response Section of the Montgomery County Police Department was created to decrease the number of police dispatches due to false alarms. In order to counterbalance this loss of police resources, the Montgomery County of Police has instituted the following fee schedule for false alarms. The Occurrence counter resets at the beginning of each calendar year.
